Birmingham startup Mixtroz hits $1 million in funding via Al.com

Birmingham tech startup Mixtroz has reached $1 million in funding, a heady milestone for the company that moved its headquarters to the Magic City.

The funding also means that mother-daughter founders Kerry Schrader and Ashlee Ammons have joined the exclusive circle of black female entrepreneurs to close $1 million in seed funding.

Mixtroz, founded in Nashville three years ago, is an app that helps people connect and engage at networking events. It simultaneously matches attendees with 25 or more people using similar responses and allows people to connect easily.

It’s been a big year for Mixtroz, which participated in Innovation Depot’s Velocity Accelerator. In May, the firm captured a $100,000 investment from Revolution’s Rise of the Rest Seed Fund tour. It was also featured on A&E’s “Rooster & Butch” program in February.

Mixtroz is leveraging the secured funding to support the growth and continued evolution of its newly launched Software-as-a-Service platform and grow its core team.

Schrader said the funding was a “huge success for us, especially considering we are black, female, non-technical tech founders.” She gave credit to Innovation Depot’s Velocity Accelerator and Birmingham-based fund Bronze Valley.

“As a startup, Birmingham has proved to be a perfect homebase for us," Schrader said. "They have figured out how civic, corporate and tech ecosytems must come together to breed success, and we attribute a lot of our accomplishments to the supportive business community here. "

That lines up with comments Ammons made earlier this year at SlossTech. “I will say this until I’m blue in the face, it took us in Nashville a year-and-a-half to make the same progress it took us 13 weeks to make in Birmingham,” she said.

Ammons said the company’s funding and roster of clients shows a need for its product.

“People attend events to make valuable connections,” she said. "In the digital age, if the main motivation was to consume content, we’d all just livestream at home. Mixtroz is a way to make the most of your time when you have decided to make the effort to leave the house and attend an event.”
